Process Management Academy Europe 2008

January 28-30, 2008 - Düsseldorf, Germany

Crossing the Chasm between Management, Technologists, and Operations to Boost Plant Performance

ARC's fourth annual Process Management Academy (PMA) brought together more than 300 manufacturers and suppliers to learn how intelligent automation can help optimize performance in process plants and to network with others to discuss common issues.

Process Management Academy Europe 2008

Supported by 23 global technology leaders, international media, and major industry associations including NAMUR, PMA extended across a broad scope of industry topics and addressed a pan-European audience.  The event offered a platform for presentations about case studies, technology trends, best practices, and strategies for success, accompanied by informative exhibits.  Using basic automation technologies to achieve Operational Excellence to succeed in today’s flat world was the recurring theme of PMA 2008.

Process Management Academy Europe 2008

On the first day, ARC hosted a workshop of the Benchmarking Consortium for Automation and Manufacturing IT, an organization for end users, facilitated by ARC.  Manufacturers received an update on the status of the Consortium and help in identifying the benefits of cross-sector benchmarking.  An in-depth discussion revealed that benchmarking can serve a plethora of business purposes, ranging from motivating people in a team to improving Operational Excellence in a global enterprise.  The success of benchmarking is achieved when all contributors have a common understanding of its purpose and metrics.

Arne Svendsen, Arla Foods The two following days consisted of 54 presentations with an emphasis on increased visibility into production operations, quality and safety, integration of business and operational systems, emerging standards, control system migration, and optimization of plant design.  Case studies were presented by Arla Foods, EDF, Evonik Degussa, Merck, and Shell.  The cases dealt with a wide variety of technology-based solutions, ranging from automation, through operations management, to operational excellence. In all cases the importance of aligning initiatives with business and process goals was stressed.

The adaptation of work practices is considered crucial to reap benefits from solutions. The success of projects depends to a large extent on crossing the chasm between all stakeholders:  management, technologists and users.  A common understanding is facilitated by direct communications resulting in motivation, autonomy, and implication.  As an example, EDF mentioned that experience in operations helps corporate technologists to be credible in creating awareness and proposing solutions to operational challenges.

ARC gave insight into best practices in the governance of manufacturing IT to increase visibility and improve returns on technology spending, complying with the obligations to regulators and the financial community and improving relationships between stakeholders.  In a dedicated track session, the industry organization PROLIST® List of Properties dealt with implementations and the technology to optimize engineering workflows.

Bernard Scherrer, EDF
